Podcast – An Eastern Approach to Pet Nutrition with Dr. Michael Munzer from All Creatures Acupuncture

In this episode of The Woof Meow Show from May 19^th, 2018, Don learns about the Eastern or Chinese Medicine approach to nutrition from Dr. Michael Munzer from All Creatures Acupuncture. Last year Dr. Munzer completed a certification program in Chinese Food Therapy from the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. He discusses the critical differences in the Chinese Medicine approach to nutrition as compared to what he learned in veterinary school where the approach was what is the bare minimum of nutrition necessary to sustain life. Chinese medicine looks at food more deeply for each individual patient. This can make the method better suited for treating specific health issues. Tune in and learn about this interesting approach to feeding your pet for optimal health from Dr. Michael Munzer.

Recalls – What Do I Need to Do If My Pet’s Food is Recalled?

The information you will need when you learn of a recall includes:

The specific brand name and formula of the food being recalled. (g., Yummy Pet Adult formula)
The size of the package being recalled (g. 3.2lbs bag). In some cases only a specific size package may be recalled, other times it may be multiple package types.
The SKU number for the product(s)
The manufacturer’s lot number, used to identify the date and time the food was manufactured.
The “Best by” or expiration date.
What to do with the product you have remaining.

When Green Acres Kennel Shop learns of a pet food recall we first determine if any of our clients have purchased the product. If a client has provided us with contact information, we call or email them if they have purchased the recalled product. We then post a recall notice on our blog at www.words-woofs.meows.com and on the Green Acres Kennel Shop Facebook page to alert others who may have purchased the recalled product from someplace other than our store. If you subscribe to our blog, you will be emailed these notices automatically. If you like and follow the Green Acres Kennel Shop Facebook page and set Following to “See First,” any recall notice we post there should automatically appear in your Facebook newsfeed. I say “should” because we all know Facebook is constantly changing. You can also retrieve information on pet food recalls from the FDA’s website at https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/.

Once you have the above information, you can determine what to do next. As long as you have kept the original bag/can/container/package which the food came in, you can compare the product SKU, lot number, and best by date to determine if you have a product that has been recalled. We recommend that you always keep the container the food came in until you have used all of the food. At Green Acres, we can tell you what SKU you purchased and when you purchased it, but we do not have access to lot numbers and best by dates.

If your specific pet food is not affected by the recall, you do not need to do anything.

If your specific pet food is affected by the recall, contact the retailer where you purchased the product, and they can provide you with instructions on how to proceed. At Green Acres, we will offer you a full refund on products that have been recalled, provided the product was purchased at Green Acres, and that you have the original packaging.

If you do not have the original packaging and therefore cannot determine if the food you have has been recalled, it will be safest to dispose of the food.

Gift Ideas for Dog Lovers

The holiday gift-giving season is upon us, and for many of us, that means finding that special something for our friends with dogs. I believe that one of the best gifts we can give is knowledge, so here are my recommendations for three books and one DVD that are perfect gifts for dog lovers everywhere.

A Kids’ Comprehensive Guide to Speaking Dog! by Niki Tudge –If your family includes children and a dog, if you have children that spend time around friends and family members that have a dog, or if you have a dog that spends any time around children, you, your children, and your dog will benefit from your reading A Kids’ Comprehensive Guide to Speaking Dog!.

The goal of this new book from author Niki Tudge and Doggone Safe is to provide a resource that anyone can use to teach children how to be safe around dogs by teaching them how to “speak dog.” As a dog training instructor that teaches both adults and children how to train their dogs, we make teaching canine body language part of our classes. What I have learned over the past 22 years is that before taking a dog training class, even most adults are not aware of most aspects of “speaking dog,” which is why I believe this book will be of value to both children and adults.

A Kids’ Comprehensive Guide to Speaking Dog! is written to be used as an interactive resource and uses cartoons and photographs to illustrate body language dogs use to signal when they are happy, afraid, and angry. By teaching children, and adults, how to read and respond to these signs the book helps keep people and dogs safe. The world is full of children and dogs, and it is essential that we teach them how to interact safely. A Kids’ Comprehensive Guide to Speaking Dog! combined with a parent or teacher does just that. I give this book five paws!

Hope for Someday by Vincent Ewald, illustrated by Tom Leigh – Written by Ark Executive Director, Vincent Ewald, and illustrated by Ark Board President, Tom Leigh, Hope for Someday is a beautiful picture book for children. It is the perfect book for teaching children that pets experience the same emotions as people. By learning that our pets share these feelings, it is hoped that our children will learn the importance of compassion for all living things. The book is the core of The Ark Animal Shelters PippY (Positively Inspiring Pet Programs for Youths) program, and all proceeds from the sale of the book directly support that project.

My last two selections are a DVD and a book which address pet nutrition. This is such an important topic and one where the world is filled with a great deal of misinformation such as the advertisements we see on TV. The documentary film Pet Fooled – A Look Inside A Questionable Industry by director Kohl Harrington examines the megalithic corporate entities that produce and market the vast majority of what we feed our pets. What Harrington shows us is not always pretty nor healthy for our pets. Two of the veterinarians that appear in the film; Dr. Barbara Royal and Dr. Karen Becker explain what our pets need to eat to be healthy, and what you need to look for in a food if you desire optimum health for your pets. I first heard Dr. Richard Patton speak about pet nutrition at a conference in the fall of 2015. I was so impressed with the depth of his knowledge and his ability to speak in terms that the average pet owner could understand, that I invited him to speak in Bangor six months later. His book Ruined by Excess, Perfected by Lack addresses two of the most significant health crises facing our pets; obesity and poor nutrition. If you want to learn how to feed your pet for optimal health, I encourage you to read this book.

I was so impressed by the quality and importance of the information in Pet Fooled and Ruined by Excess, Perfected by Lack that I provided many veterinarians in the area with copies as a gift.

The world of pet food is more than a little confusing. It can also be very misleading and even deceptive. In this blog post, I will be listing several articles, podcasts, books and websites that I have found to be excellent sources of information on pet nutrition. It is the goal of my blog, and our store, Green Acres Kennel Shop, to help you stay informed about pet food so that you can make healthy choices for your pets while staying within your budget.

I would encourage you to subscribe to my blog as every time I learn something new; I will update this article. I am always reading new information on nutrition and interviewing new guests for our radio show and podcast, The Woof Meow Show simply because nutrition is a constantly evolving science. Additionally, when I become aware of pet food recalls I post them on my blog as soon as possible. All you need to do to subscribe is to enter your email address and to click on subscribe.

My wife Paula and I became interested in pet nutrition by necessity when our Cairn Terrier Gus developed health issues that were directly related to what we were feeding him. Since then pet nutrition has become our passion. In fact, Gus and his health and nutritional quirks are a primary reason we entered the pet care services industry back in 1995.

In this episode of The Woof Meow Show on May 6^th, 2017 Kate and Don interview Kohl Harrington the director of the new documentary film Pet Fooled – A Look Inside A Questionable Industry. Pet Fooled offers a critical review of the pet food industry, and it is not pretty. Listen to this show and learn why big pet food companies may not be as concerned about your pet’s health as they want you to believe.

Issues explored in the film and on this episode of The Woof Meow Show include; regulatory lapses which led to the pet food recalls of 2007, the high-powered marketing used to promote food that is not biologically appropriate for cats or dogs, confusing but legal advertising that makes pet foods look better than they are, and the major pet food companies problematic influence over veterinary education and the regulation of pet foods, and more.

Homemade food for your pet: Canine

One-on-One (Dr. Pitcairn)

2 1/2 cups cooked brown rice

1 cup lean hamburger or similar

1 cup cooked kidney beans

1 tbsp. Healthy Powder

1 tbsp. vegetable oil

1 tsp bone meal

10,000 IU Vit A and D capsule

400IU Vitamin E capsule

1 tsp salt or soy sauce (optional)

1 small clove fresh garlic (optional)

250kcal/cup 32% protein, 17% fat, 47% carbs

Green Turkey (Barbara Taylor-Laino)

3lbs ground turkey meat

1 egg

1 cup finely chopped raw seasonal produce

1/4 finely chopped fresh dark leafy greens

2 tbsp. bonemeal

2 tbsp. alfalfa powder

1 tsp powdered garlic

1 tsp kelp

1 tsp dulse

Healthy Pawsibilities Blend (Dr. Cathy Alinovi)

6 oz. beef liver

6 oz. beef kidney

6 oz. ground chicken

6 oz. ground beef

6 oz. ground turkey

2 tbsp. olive oil

12 oz. cauliflower

12 oz. broccoli

12 oz. carrots

12 oz. canned kidney beans

12 oz. pinto beans

Healthy powder—

2 cups nutritional yeast,

1 cup lecithin granules,

1/4 cup kelp powder,

1000 mg vitamin C

Homemade food for your pet: Feline

Mackerel Loaf (Dr. Pitcairn)

4 large eggs

3 cups whole milk

3 tbsp. healthy powder

1 1/2 tsp bone meal

100 IU Vitamin E

1 tbsp. fresh vegetables

500mg taurine supplement

2 tbsp. vegetable oil

2-15 oz. cans of mackerel

6 slices whole wheat bread, crumbled

Ground chicken and eggs dinner (Cynthia Cherry)

4 1/2 lbs. chicken thighs

7 oz. turkey or chicken livers

14 oz. raw chicken heart

1 cup bottled spring water

4 large egg yolks

4000 mg wild salmon oil

200mg vitamin B complex

200 I U Vitamin E supplement

2000 mg taurine

1tbsp psyllium husk
