Podcast – Cold Weather and Holiday Tips for Pets-2017

< Click to Listen to Podcast >

Like it or not the seasons are changing. With the change in season, we get colder temperatures, less daylight, and other changes in our environment which will affect both us and our pets. Add to that the fact that the last two months of the year are jam-packed with both the joy and chaos of numerous frenetic activities and holiday festivities. It can be a tough time of year for our pets who overall are not big fans of change and disruption of their routines. In this week’s show, Kate and Don discuss how to deal with snow, cold and ice and how to dress yourself and your dog when you are out at night or in the woods during the day. We talk about a wide variety of potential seasonal hazards such as antifreeze, wood stoves, wood piles, candy, and more. Lastly, we discuss how to deal with the holidays so that they are enjoyable for you, your pets and your guests.

Shared Blog Post – AAHA Vaccination Guidelines 2017 for Dogs – A Review by Dr. Jean Dodds

Veterinarian Dr. Jean Dodds reviews the newly published 2017 Canine Vaccination Guidelines released by the American Animal Hospital Association. Dr. Dodds recommendations somewhat from the AAHA guidelines stating “Overall, I applaud the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) for its transparency, website language, layout and tools that are very pet companion caregiver friendly. I particularly like the Lifestyle-Based Vaccine Calculator that helps pet parents determine if their pets need a lifestyle vaccination.”

Dr. Dodds also notes “The most significant change AAHA has made is on its position on antibody titer testing. Bear in mind that it is not a recommendation or an endorsement of titer testing in lieu of the three-year vaccination series of distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus. If this were the case, titers would be listed on AAHA’s official protocol. However, it is an admission by AAHA that titer tests are alternatives to vaccination. The proof is on the website. In-depth diagnostic web pages are provided to veterinarians. Additionally, the pet caregiver section mentions the titer test alternative on the main vaccination guidelines webpage.” [Emphasis Added]

Green Acres Kennel Shop has accepted titer tests when recommended by your veterinarian as a safer and healthier alternative to revaccination for many years and we also laud their new enlightened position.

Shared Blog Post – Updated Canine Vaccination Guidelines by Nancy Kay, DVM

Veterinarian Nancy Kay discusses the 2017 Canine Vaccination Guidelines released by the American Animal Hospital Association. This is the first update of this document since 2011.

The core vaccines for a dog remain; 1) Rabies and 2) DAPP: a combination of Canine Distemper Virus, Adenovirus-2, and Parvovirus +/- Parainfluenza Virus.

Non-core vaccinations (those that may be warranted depending on the dog’s lifestyle) now includes: Bordetella bronchiseptica + canine parainfluenza virus (kennel cough), Bordetella bronchiseptica only (kennel cough), Leptospirosis, Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease), Canine Influenza Virus– H3N8, Canine Influenza Virus– H3N2, Crotalus atrox (rattlesnake vaccine).

The new guidelines also provide an in-depth discussion of antibody or titer testing versus revaccination. Dr. Kay notes: “Antibody testing is becoming more popular amongst people who prefer to rely on test results rather than automatically give a distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus booster every three years. Vaccine serology is also useful for determining if a puppy who has just completed the vaccination series has mounted an adequate immune system response. Additionally, antibody testing can be helpful in situations in which revaccinating might not be a wise choice such as: A dog with a chronic illness, A dog who is very elderly, A dog who has experienced a prior adverse reaction to a vaccination, A dog with a history of immune-mediated (autoimmune disease), A dog who is receiving drugs that could suppress the immune system’s response to a vaccination.”

Green Acres Kennel Shop accepts titer tests when recommended by your veterinarian as a safer and healthier alternative to revaccination.

An article discussing bloat or gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) by veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker. A new study indicates that the vast majority of dogs who undergo surgery for GDV survive. The study also indicates that the dogs most likely to develop GDV are purebred and weigh over 88 pounds. The Great Dane, Akita, Dogue de Bordeaux, Irish Setter and Weimaraner are the breeds that have the greatest risk of developing GDV. Books

Canine Behavior & Training

On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals, Turid Rugaas, Dogwise Publishing, 2006, An excellent book on understanding a dog’s body language. Includes descriptions of how you can use your own body language to better communicate with your dog.

Dog Sense: How the New Science of Dog Behavior Can Make You A Better Friend to Your Pet, John Bradshaw, Basic Books, 2011,

The Power of Positive Dog Training, Pat Miller, Howell Book House, 2001. I have been reading Pat Miller’s articles in the Whole Dog Journal for years and have loved everything she has written. She is a skilled and compassionate dog trainer who really knows how to communicate to dog owners through her writing. This book is a superb “basic dog book” for anyone with a dog, and I highly recommend it.

The Other End of the Leash – Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs,Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D, Ballantine Books, 2002, An information-packed, immensely readable book. In it you will learn how to have a better relationship with your dog through better communications. Dr. McConnell clearly explains the manners in which dogs and their people communicate.

For the Love of A Dog Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend, Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D, Ballantine Books, 2005, 2006, A superb review of emotions in both dogs and their people and how they bring us together and can rip us apart. Once again Dr. McConnell helps us to better understand our dogs and in doing so have the best possible relationship with them.

Dogs: A new Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution, Raymond and Lorna Coppinger, University of Chicago Press, 2001, An evolutionary biologist and dog lover, Coppinger outlines the likely process which resulted in the longstanding canine-human relationship.

Podcast – The Unintended Consequences of Shock Collars

< Click to Listen to Podcast >

In this episode of The Woof Meow Show from October 21, 2017, Don and Kate discuss electronic shock collars. While Don and Kate would never recommend using a shock collar on a dog for any reason, they recognize that not everyone who uses a shock collar on their dog does so understanding the harm it can cause. Sadly, often the companies that sell and manufacture shock collars do not provide you with all of the information you need to make an informed decision.

This show addresses the following questions;

  • What is a shock collar?,
  • How are shock collars used?,
  • How does a shock collar change a dog’s behavior?,
  • What makes the use of a shock collar inappropriate?,
  • What do experts say about shock collars?, and
  • What can people concerned about a dogs well-being do to help prevent dogs from getting shocked?
